Industry insights from gamescom 2025

This year’s gamescom highlighted several shifts in how gaming companies are approaching payments and monetization. Tyler Kim, Senior Director of Business Development in Video Games at Paysafe, shared that “One of the biggest changes we’re seeing is the move toward direct-to-consumer models. Many mid-sized and large developers are building their own internal payment platforms and exploring new monetization strategies. There’s also been a noticeable rise in merchant-of-record companies entering the space, which is adding more competition and complexity.”

These changes show a rising need for flexible, scalable payment solutions; an area where Paysafe is well-suited to support gaming companies.

Martin Shields, Director of Relationship Management at Paysafe, highlighted a growing trend: “More developers are investing in content creator-led presentations and events. It’s part of a broader effort to interact with their communities more directly.” Although not entirely new, this method is becoming more organized and strategic, aligning closely with the importance of digital wallets and seamless payment experiences.

Highlights from the show floor

As always, gamescom delivered major reveals and memorable experiences. Key developers were present for important launches, including updates on massive gaming franchises like Call of Duty, Resident Evil, and Anno. Hardware leaders such as Nintendo and Samsung also had a strong presence, highlighting the continued convergence of gaming and tech.

Shields also observed that “Most of the big titles were represented in some way, and the energy around new releases was high. It’s always a great reminder of how quickly the industry moves.”

These moments not only captured attention on the show floor but also reinforced the importance of seamless, scalable payments that can support global launches and growing player bases.

Looking ahead
