BGN Account Closure and EUR Reopening Option

On 1st of January 2026 Bulgaria is converting their national currency to the Euro and is joining 20 other EU members who use the currency. From this date forward, all payments or e-commerce solutions will be processed in Euros.

E-commerce solutions

At the latest, by 1st of January 2026, prices in your website need to be in EUR. You need to manage this price update yourself or with the help of your website provider.

No, your action is required.

Merchants need to disable BGN on their website and checkout page as an available payment currency before 31st December 2025 and start processing transactions in EUR. Refunds can be processed until February 28th, at which point all BGN capable accounts will be closed.

If your website or application automatically determines processing currency and transmits currency codes to Paysafe, merchants will need to ensure that BGN currency codes are disabled and only EUR currency codes are submitted.

Yes, when you switch off the BGN currency it will impact all your Payment Products.

Special transactions

Refunds performed after 1st of January 2026 for purchases made in BGN before 31st of December 2025 (included) can still be submitted until February 28th, 2026.

The cardholder will receive the amount equivalent in EUR, based on the official exchange rate 1.00 Euro = 1.95583 BGN Lev.

No, your settlement will not be affected.

No, it is your business bank’s responsibility to convert the account currency from Bulgarian Lev (BGN) to Euro (EUR). The account number remains the same.

Reports

 

From 1st of January 2026, all transactions are performed in EUR and they are shown in EUR in reports.

Transactions performed in BGN before 1st of January 2026 remain visible as such in reports. No recalculation to Euro will be done for transactions prior to 1st of January 2026.
