Introduction:
In order to conduct business over the Internet, merchants need to
have a secure way of acquiring customer payment information. This
usually requires the opening of a special E-commerce/secure web
site costing hundreds of dollars to setup and maintain. In most
cases a web site conducting commerce does not need to run in
secure mode until personal and payment information is to be
exchanged.
Paysafe secure data services provides a unique and cost effective
solution by acting as a proxy of secure information for your
existing website. The only requirements to take advantage of
Paysafe's secure payment services are:
- A home page located anywhere on the World Wide Web.
- Access to Netscape Navigator (2.0 or greater), or
Microsoft Explorer web browser.
- A standard Email account.
- A method to locally process credit card charges, which normally
requires a merchant bank account.
The diagram below demonstrates how the Paysafe secure payment
system works. Red and olive lines are un-secure sessions,
green and navy lines are secure encrypted sessions.
- Customer browses merchant site and decides to purchase a
product or service. Merchant website performs the order
computation and presents an invoice to the customer. (Note:
If merchant does not have cgi-bin access locally, Paysafe
has an interface where it will process the order
computation, shipping, and taxes based on a simple
model.) The customer verifies the order and presses
the form's submit button. During this phase communication
between the customer and merchant is not secure as
indicated by the red arrow.
- The customer is seamlessly transferred from the
merchant's website to the Paysafe secure data processor.
A final invoice is presented based on the data provided
by the merchant site. The form contains entries for
payment information such as name, address, telephone, and
credit card number. The session is encrypted for privacy.
Upon completion the customer presses the submit
button on the form. The data is placed in the merchant's
database at Paysafe, and steps 3, 4, and 5 are initiated.
- An Email is sent informing merchant of the
transaction.
- Optionally merchants who have Cybercash gateway accounts
may clear the transaction online. Users need to sign up directly
with cybercash for this service.
- The customer is sent an acknowledgment and finally
returned to the merchant's homepage.
- Upon receiving Email, the merchant logs into Paysafe
using a browser. The session is encrypted to
preserve privacy and security of the data. The Merchant
retrieves payment information and uses local Point of
Sale Device to perform actual charge. Finally
Merchant removes data from Paysafe server.
Secure Payment
Interfaces:
Secure Payment Management from Paysafe has three interfaces to
meet the different needs of merchants. The data exchanged
between the merchant webserver and Paysafe varies depending on
the interface.
- Invoice Computation and Secure Payment
Management: See Demo
- This interface is designed for merchants who have a small
product line and do not require the use of a shopping
cart. Following a set of guidelines, Paysafe can process
the order form, calculating taxes, shipping charges, and
balance due. Customer is presented with an invoice and
prompted securely for credit card payment information.
This interface removes the need for any cgi-bin access or
programming at the merchant site. The captured payment
information is stored in merchant's database
for later retrieval.
- Secure Payment Capture: See Demo
- In this interface no computation is performed by Paysafe.
This system is designed for merchants who use
shopping carts, or Javascript and local cgi-bin to
compute the order and only require secure payment
information capture. Paysafe will present the final
balance due to the customer and collect payment
information. The data is stored in a private merchant
database for later retrieval.
- Secure Data processing:
- In this interface no invoice is presented to the
customer, secure data of any type is captured from the
merchant form and stored in merchant's database at
Paysafe. This system may be used to communicate private
information such as passwords, credit card information,
etc.. between service providers and their clients.
Service Fees:
The fee for paysafe's secure payment capture service is US$20 per
month for up to 10,000 secure form data collected. Higher volume rates
available. First month is free. There is no setup fee. Consulting
are available. Billing is through credit card.
